Abstract
As users become more demanding regarding multimedia content consumption, measuring their satisfaction level is increasingly important. The difficulty of assessing Quality of Experience (QoE) has popularised objective QoE models that emulate human behaviour in multimedia playback. Some existing models are based on bitrate, but PSNR and VMAF have been proven to be closer to human perception. This paper proposes three new models to analytically measure QoE in DASH video services: one based on displayed segment bitrate and two based on per-segment video quality. The models are compared with ITU-T P.1203 and the Yin et al. bitrate model, and validated through a subjective study. The paper also presents the Look Ahead ABR algorithm, which exploits variable bitrate encoding to calculate appropriate quality levels that minimize stalls during playback.
