Abstract
This PhD thesis addresses the improvement of DASH video streaming with variable bitrate encoding through three main contributions: the Look Ahead ABR algorithm, SAND-based coordination mechanisms for multi-user wireless scenarios, and new QoE metrics. The Look Ahead algorithm exploits variable bitrate information from constant-quality encodings to improve quality level selection in DASH streaming. SAND (Server and Network Assisted DASH) mechanisms are explored for coordinating multiple streaming sessions in shared wireless environments. Additionally, new objective QoE metrics based on VMAF (Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion) are proposed and validated against subjective studies and existing models.
