Abstract

This Final Degree Project presents the design and implementation of SwarmLayer, a solution aimed at improving adaptive streaming distribution using MPEG-DASH in web environments. SwarmLayer proposes a hybrid architecture that combines the traditional client-server model with a peer-to-peer (P2P) approach, in which users watching the video also act as distribution nodes by sharing the segments they have. This approach aims to reduce the load on the origin server and optimize bandwidth usage. The solution is implemented as an intermediate, transparent, and non-intrusive layer placed between the media player and the distribution system. It enables clients to share video segments without modifying application logic or the existing infrastructure. The project includes both the development of distributed logic in the web client and the implementation of the necessary services for proper operation. To achieve this, standard and open-source technologies have been used, such as MPEG-DASH, WebRTC, Service Workers, and Protocol Buffers.
